Across 2 weeks with 70-plus artists booked to perform live, Brisbane Winter Sessions is an opportunity to support the local, vibrant music scene and emerging artists during yet another challenging time for the music industry.
Supported by Brisbane City Council, Brisbane Winter Sessions will feature laneway parties, free gigs and incredible activation experiences at 15 Brisbane venues and spaces from 5-18 August. Some of the featured events include Planet Of The Breaks, Raising The Roof fundraiser, That Sound Over The Fence Festival, and Fluffy's High School Reunion.
The festival will also feature a number of international acts with shoegaze legends Ride joined by psych-pop rockers Mercury Rev at The Tivoli (14 August). While New Zealand's Fazerdaze will support local legends Last Dinosaurs at The Princess Theatre (9 August).
Other highlights of the line-up include Katie Noonan, Karl S. Williams, Kid Kenobi, Vinyl Slingers, Bean Magazine, Ben Ely's Mungo Fungo Band, Sarah Stockholm, Sabrina Lawrie, Golden Sound, Totally Unicorn and Nikolaine Martin.
Organiser, producer, and ARIA Award winner Tyrone Noonan (who'll also perform live) is the brains behind celebrating all things music at Winter Sessions.
"It's fantastic to see the festival return and showcase our city's music scene," he says. "Local talent will perform, along with emerging artists and established international acts, so there's something for everyone."
At a time when much loved venues are closing around the country, it's more important than ever to promote our city's music life, Tyrone says. The festival arrives in the wake of Brisbane's iconic and revered venue The Zoo, which closed its doors for the final time last Sunday.
The COVID-19 pandemic and cost-of-living crisis has seen 1,300 small and mid-sized Australian live music venues close since the start of the pandemic, one-third of the entire sector.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner says the festival offers more to see and do for music lovers in Brisbane. "Our city has a long and proud history of supporting rising stars, with Brisbane producing some of Australia's most celebrated musicians.
"Winter Sessions provides a fantastic opportunity to support local artists and iconic venues with fantastic free and ticketed experiences. I encourage everyone to get out this winter as we shine the spotlight on our city's talented artists and the places that made them."
Brisbane Winter Sessions runs 5-18 August at a range of venues.
