Since forming less than two years ago, Brisbane stoner-rock trio Mammoth have been clawing their way through the local music scene.

In early 2017 the lads will unveil their brand new, six track, self-titled EP. In the lead-up to the release, Mammoth have released two singles from the EP, 'Velociraptor Dashboard' and 'Desert Lizard Desert Death', which guitarist Elijah Lee says have become crowd favourites. “Those two are two of the first songs we wrote,” Elijah says.

“That's why we decided to release them before the album came out because those were the ones that everyone has heard at our shows and they're two of the more popular ones our audience fan-base know.”

Elijah is joined by Storm Mahan on drums and Tolga Pasin as bassist and vocalist, together melding their various styles into a dark blend of metal-tinged stoner rock. Although Mammoth have been playing consistently at local venues around Brisbane, Elijah says the group is just as happy playing to empty rooms as they are full houses. “For us, the music thing is something we really enjoy,” he says.

“We enjoy writing music and playing music, so playing shows, we try to do that as much as we can, and if people show up to our shows it's awesome. If they don't, it's not really a big deal to us because we really enjoy playing the music and that's what it's all about for us.

“We try and get involved as much as we can in the scene. We know a lot of other bands around our age in Brisbane and play a lot of house parties with them to try and get our music out there. At the end of the day, it's more that we enjoy playing music and we just try to do that as much as we can.”

Mammoth will launch the EP in January at New Globe Theatre where they'll be joined by a handful of local bands to help them celebrate. “We'll be launching the EP, so we're probably going to be playing that in full and play some new stuff,” Elijah says.

“We're playing with a couple of our friends' bands that we've played a lot of shows with like Regular Band and some others who we're close with, so we're pretty stoked to be playing that show.”

For a band whose members are only just old enough to play in pubs and clubs, Mammoth have already laid a solid foundation for a career moving forward. Elijah says that while they are taking the music seriously, he, Storm and Tolga are also simply enjoying the fact they're doing what they want. “We're just seeing where it goes to be honest,” he says.

“We're all music-oriented people, we've grown up with music, we've grown up playing instruments, watching bands and wanting to be in a band so we can go around and play music

“If at the end of the day it turns into something where we can travel the world, make albums and have some success then that's awesome, but if it keeps being a thing where we just make music, that's fine for us.”

Mammoth launch their self-titled EP at New Globe Theatre 7 January.
