Brisbane Singer Tylea Is Back In The Mix

A seasoned all-rounder music writer and storyteller with a specialised interest in the history of rock.

Brisbane singer-songwriter Tylea Goold will find herself in pleasant company when she performs as part of the upcoming Mixtape sessions at Brisbane Powerhouse.

As part of the weekly Livespark programme, Mixtape takes place on the last Sunday of each month and brings together three musicians to discuss influential music in their lives and perform their own mixtape of originals and covers.

For Tylea, it’s an opportunity connect with her fellow artists and share what drives them in the creation of their work.

“I think it’s really good for other songwriters to see the process of how others write and connect,” she says.

“I think if you’re in the audience or a songwriter, it’s really good to connect with people of that calibre – though I’m not including myself in that,” she adds with a wry laugh.

“There’s so much experience between everybody and there are different stages of your career; it’s not about what just happens in the beginning, it’s a lot about fostering how you can keep your interest, your passion and your love for songwriting, and keep pursuing it.”

Tylea will be joined at Mixtape by Queensland singer-songwriter Roz Pappalardo as well as stalwarts of the Brisbane music scene Ben Ely of Regurgitator and Marcello Milani.

Tylea says the line-up is reminiscent of her early days performing around Brisbane and the sense of community among artists at the time. “It’s funny because when I first started performing in Brisbane, Marcello and Ben were in bands that I just absolutely idolised.

“So for me early on it was the community of artists in Brisbane and that ranged from indie, rock and pop artists – there were all sorts of things going on.”

Tylea’s extensive work includes performing lead vocals for the band Gota Cola as well as a swag of solo releases, including her latest album ‘The Lake Of Sand And Stone’ that was released in September last year.

The album is her first official full release since her 2005 double-album ‘Colour Your Insecurities’, which was accompanied by a 60-page booklet featuring Tylea’s own black and white ‘people’ drawings.

Tylea says making ‘The Lake Of Sand And Stone’ was set as a personal challenge of her artistry. “I think I had to prove to myself that I could release something again because there are obviously a lot more pressures and restraints this time around, and it did actually take me quite a long time to get back there.

“But I just needed to prove to myself that I could still put together ideas and connect with people,” she says.

“In terms of the way I used to generate my expectations – like in my late 20s and early 30s – I had very high pressure and expectation on myself to achieve things and I think that’s par for the course for being that age.

“But now I’m more relaxed about how things flow in life and there are a lot more things to balance. So I was approaching it in a different way where previously when I was young it was all or nothing; it was very much every day all day and this was a very different process for me. So I’m very happy with what I’ve achieved.”

Tylea Goold performs as part of Livespark+Mixtape at Brisbane Powerhouse 25 March.
