Brisbane Singer-Songwriter Lizzie Flynn Enjoys The Open Sky On Her New Album

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Brisbane singer-songwriter Lizzie Flynn is finally ready to release her new album, 'You And The Open Sky'.

Two years in the making, she's over the moon. “I'm feeling really excited about the album. I've been making it for about two years and it has lots of different musicians on it, with a wide variety of instrumentation.”

In the two years Lizzie has been creating 'You And The Open Sky', she travelled around Australia to get the sound she was chasing. “I've recorded it at about four studios around Australia in Melbourne, Brisbane, Yamba and Geelong.

“I did it to capture different musicians that were in those places. It's all original music, so it's been a really exciting project.”

Lizzie says she likes to tell a story through her music, and 'You And The Open Sky' is no exception. “I've called it 'You And The Open Sky'; that's a lyric from the main track which is called 'Awakening',” Lizzie says.

“I wanted to call it 'You And The Open Sky' because at the time I wrote it I was driving in a car having a road trip from Melbourne and you could see the open, blue sky and it reminded me that each day is a fresh start, it's an empty palette you can start again.”

Lizzie will be touring up and down the east coast of Australia, kicking it off at Maleny Folk Festival before continuing with more dates throughout September to December including Folk By the Sea, Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival and Gold Coast Acoustics Festival Fringe.

Lizzie is especially looking forward to her album launch at the Brisbane Powerhouse. “It's going to be a special gig,” Lizzie says.

“I really wanted to recreate the CD and do it in an intimate theatre setting. My support for that is Liam Gerner, who's a really great musician from Melbourne. I guess I'm really looking forward to finally launching it in my home town of Brisbane.”

Lizzie says she has always been passionate about playing and creating original music. “I've been writing songs for many years. I recorded a CD ten years ago called 'Hush'. I received an Arts Queensland grant for that one,” Lizzie says.

“Since then I've done many projects, but it's taken a while to make this CD because I guess the more you do it the more fussy you get.”

When it comes to music that inspires Lizzie, she prefers hearing a yarn. “I really enjoy listening to songs that also tell a story. Influences like Paul Kelly, Kasey Chambers and Bernard Fanning. But I also lived in Ireland for a year and a half and I really like the indie Irish artists as well.”

‘You And The Open Sky’ is available now.
