With a decade-plus residency in Brisbane spread across two venues (Step Inn and its current home at Black Bear Lodge), retro-dance night Watch Your Step will celebrate 10 years with a monster, mod-soul weekend (21-22 July).
The celebrations will be headlined by resident vinyl fanatics Gaz, Paolo and Milesago and a host of local and interstate guest DJs including Phil Moore (Sweet But Deadly, UK), Gavin Needham (Land of a Thousand Dances, WA), Miss Goldie (Soul A-Go-Go, VIC), Heata HG (Southside Soul, VIC), Owen Penglis (Straight Arrows, NSW) and Dusty Stylus (Shimmy Shimmy, VIC) just to name a few.
There will also be an afternoon vinyl record bar held at Super Whatnot (Brisbane CBD) 22 July.
Our mission is and, has always been to provide a great night out for tuned in people who want to dance to rare and underplayed vintage vinyl. We are definitely not a novelty act and the thought of playing the classics all night isn’t really part of our M.O.
The poetic truth is that we’ve all spent much of our lives looking far away from home for interesting underplayed music. Much of the music we play never escaped the towns and cities from which it came. You can walk into Watch Your Step and hear incredible soul, funk and garage that probably hasn’t had a public airing for well over 50 years; that's a part of the charm and a reason for our longevity.
It leaves you asking; how is it that this music wasn't a hit.
