Releasing an album internationally is a “dream come true” for Japanese band Coldrain.
Coldrain, who were the first band announced for the Soundwave 2015 line-up, hail from Nagoya, Japan. The group’s third studio release, ‘The Revelation’, was released internationally in July with lead vocalist Masato Hayakawa revealing that when it came to releasing an album internationally he “never thought it would happen... it feels good”.
Soundwave won't be Coldrain's first international performance, however, as the band toured Europe earlier in the year with Bullet For My Valentine. Touring has offered Masato a variety of different experiences both musically and culturally. “Playing the shows is definitely cool. Seeing all the new places, eating [new] foods... It gets really tough sometimes not being able to go home, but except for that everything is fun and it's really cool. Touring is awesome.
“Some places in Europe were way more than we ever expected, Germany's always been cool. Poland was crazy, France was crazy. We've been lucky that we got to go in February with Bullet For My Valentine and we got to see a lot of countries. Every country has been good, I'm not going to say that anywhere was not fun. We’ve had a tonne of awesome shows this year.”
On their European tour there was never a dull moment for Masato and Coldrain, as every experience was something new or different. “Europe was crazy ‘cause you get stopped by the police if you're... we were in a British vehicle and we were stopped by the German police a tonne of times. I think they think anyone is a British vehicle has drugs, so that was something that happened while touring.
"But it's always cool... each country has their own way of expressing how they feel during shows. Like in Germany there's this way of moshing that they row a boat. They all get on the ground and start rowing this boat. It was a funny thing to see, definitely.
“Every country has their own thing, I think, towards live shows. Everyone says Australian fans are really crazy, so I can't wait to see that.”
As the first band announced last month on the Soundwave line-up, Masato is very excited to play the festival next year. “To be able to tour on Soundwave is something we've always wanted to do after watching so many videos and seeing so many things about it, just being able to be there is going to be really cool.”
Coldrain have never toured Australia, or even visited our country, making the trip even more exciting. “No it's our first time [in Australia]... I wish I had [visited] but not yet... Everybody says the weather is amazing. Basically being there... everyone says just being there makes you happy so I'm hoping for that, I can't wait.”
The only place not on the menu right now that Coldrain would love to play is the US. “We've only recorded in the US, we've never played there, and I'm half-American so I can't wait to do that too.”
Until Soundwave, Coldrain will be focussing mainly on touring. “We have a bunch of tours coming up... nothing big except for playing shows. I think we're going to be releasing a video at the end of this month or early next month, but that's about it.”
