Bret McKenzie

GRAMMY and Academy Award-winning artist Bret McKenzie (‘Flight Of The Conchords’) will return to Australia this March, for a special run of live performance dates in support of his new, critically-acclaimed album ‘Freak Out City’.

’Freak Out City’ comes after Bret’s solo debut ‘Songs Without Jokes’. Co-produced with long-time collaborator Mickey Petralia, the collection was shaped on the road with his eight-piece band, The State Highway Wonders.

Bret’s musical roots can be traced back to Wellington’s vibrant scene, where he played across reggae, electronica, indie pop and jazz. In the late ‘90s, he co-founded The Black Seeds, as well as the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra.

His work on ‘Flight Of The Conchords’ became a global phenomenon, earring a GRAMMY and launching him into the American film world, where he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2012.

The new album ‘Freak Out City’ highlights Bret’s evolving artistry, blending sharp lyricism, lush arrangements, and offbeat charm.

Bret has enjoyed recent success in the US and UK, with sold-out residencies in key cities. Now, Bret and his band will bring their signature, variety-style live show to Australia. The show will feature newly-released songs alongside old favourites. . . Plus hilarious recounting of key moments from Bret’s colourful career. . . Songs written on the fly. . . And more.

From Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy, Celine Dion and Lizzo. . . To Tony Bennett, Ricky Gervais, and even Homer/Lisa Simpson, Bret’s songwriting spans genres, generations and worlds. It’s even appeared in movies and TV shows from Minecraft to The Muppets.

Tickets on sale 16 January.
