The Joni Mitchell tribute show, Both Sides Now will unite five Australian vocalists this July to celebrate the music of the Grammy Award-winning musician.
The show features vocalists Kate Miller-Heidke, Ella Hooper, Wendy Matthews, Kristin Berardi and Rachel Gaudry, accompanied by a 12-piece band.
Joni Mitchell fans can look forward to a collection of her hits performed live including 'Big Yellow Taxi', 'Woodstock', 'A Case Of You', 'Both Sides Now' and many more.
“I think it's a show not just for Joni Mitchell fans, but anyone who loves beautiful music and beautiful voices,” singer-songwriter Rachel Gaudry says.
“I think it's going to be quite spectacular because all the singers are really wonderful and have such great accompaniment as well – with the great band, full of amazing musicians.”
“The show is for everyone. You don’t have to be a fan of Joni Mitchell.”
With all five singers having a personal attachment to Joni Mitchell, fans can expect the music to be sung from the heart. “[When I was] starting off as a singer-songwriter, discovering Joni Mitchell's album 'Blue' was a turning point,” Rachel says.
“Also, because I play piano, watching her and how she wrote songs and played piano really influenced me as a songwriter.”
Rachel originally became involved in the show due to her experience performing Joni Mitchell songs during the late '90s in Sydney. “When the producers were looking at doing a tribute concert in 2009, they were researching and saw I had done those [shows].
“So it grew from these small performances at a local venue in Sydney, to a much higher level when the producers jumped onboard and started touring it around Australia.
“This time around, we have five singers. I think having Kate and Ella added is going to make it amazing because they're both incredible singers.
"It might be a bit more concentrated because there are fewer singers [than last time], so it's going to make it more focussed.”
With a rare opportunity to hear Joni Mitchell's songs performed live, Rachel encourages fans to come along. “It's not very often that you get to hear a whole batch of Joni Mitchell songs performed.
“We will be playing all the big hits – all the favourites as well as some more obscure ones. The ones the real diehard fans will know.”
Rachel explains she is looking forward to playing in great venues, the quality of the artists and performing with a 12-piece band.
“I will be performing on piano and doing the songs 'Blue' and 'My Old Man', which I've never performed before and I've learnt especially for these concerts.
“The show is for everyone. You don’t have to be a fan of Joni Mitchell.”
