U2 frontman Bono has finally caught up to what the rest of us have known for a while — his band's music has become increasingly irrelevant.
"We're on the verge of irrelevance," he told BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe. "You have to make stuff relevant to you and where you're at, make an honest account of what you're going through. If that's relevant to other people, great. But we don't know."
The band debuted a new song, 'Invisible', during the Super Bowl. As per usual, the focus was more on the band's philanthropy than their music — fans were able to download the track for free on iTunes, with the Bank of America donating one dollar for each download (up to $2 millon) to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Bono also told Lowe that the band has been listening to the acts that originally inspired them — including The Ramones and Kraftwerk — in an effort to 'get back to basics'.
"We went back to why we wanted to be in a band in the first place. We were listening to the Ramones and Kraftwerk — you can hear both on 'Invisible'. It opened up a whole valve for me writing, it was like a damburst of sorts."
