L-R top to bottom: Fat Freddy's Drop, Dallas Frasca, Boo Mitchell, Ron Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentleman

This year's Blues On Broadbeach line-up has received several international additions to an already jam-packed bill alongside a host of Aussie arrivals.

With the likes of Melissa Etheridge, Samantha Fish & Jesse Dayton, Ana Popovic and Eric Bibb revealed in December, the free Gold Coast festival that runs across four days (16-19 May) in the middle of Broadbeach's beachside precinct will welcome New Orleans-based, Grammy Award-winning musician Jon Cleary as well as the revered Hi Rhythm Section (with Boo Mitchell), considered by some as the best musicians Memphis has ever produced.

Known for such hits as 'Got To Be More Careful' and 'When You Get Back', Cleary will be joined by his funk-R&B band, The Absolute Monster Gentleman. While Hi Rhythm Section are the house band for soul-rockabilly Memphis label Hi Records, the band playing on several hit records including releases by Al Green and Ann Peebles.

"Making my way to Australia for the 2024 Blues on Broadbeach is such a thrill, and to be doing it alongside the legendary Hi Rhythm Section makes it even more special," says Boo Mitchell, son of legendary Hi Records and Al Green producer, Willie Mitchell. "We can't wait to bring the cool sounds that Memphis is so famous for, to the iconic blues festival on the Gold Coast."

Hi Rhythm Section is comprised of Mabon Hodges (guitarist), Leroy Hodges (bassist), Charles Hodges (organist), Howard Grimes (drummer), and Archie Turner (pianist); they'll be joined by Boo plus singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lina Beach and much-loved Memphis performer Jerome Chism.

"Be prepared for a musical feast this May as we continue to stack more incredible new artists on what is already one of Blues on Broadbeach's strongest lineups," Festival Director Mark Duckworth says.

"Some of the world's best blues artists will be here for the festival and fans will be hard pressed not to make the pilgrimage to the Gold Coast this year."

Jon Cleary and Hi Rhythm Section will be joined by Melburnian roots-rocker Dallas Frasca ('Success Is The Best Revenge', 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone') who'll be promoting a new record including the single 'River Queen'), the bluesy roots-rock of veterans Chase The Sun, blues-folk-roots singer-songwriter Karl S. Williams (nominated for two 2024 Queensland Music Awards), timeless Americana-blues-country-folk duo Hussy Hicks and Byron Bay's raw soul, husky blues artist Cass Eager (who'll be promoting her new album 'Modern History).

"We are pretty stoked to announce we are playing this years Blues on Broadbeach \m/ It's going to be killer and what a line-up," shares Chase The Sun.

The festival also recently announced a special Sunday instalment (that is ticketed) to be staged at Kurrawa Park headlined by New Zealand's genre-bending powerhouse Fat Freddy’s Drop (their only Australian show this year), alongside local music innovators and genre mashers Tijuana Cartel, and electric creatives BOOMCHILD.

"Blues on Broadbeach continues to build a loyal tribe of fans who make the trek across the country and from overseas every year to enjoy four epic days of live music on the Gold Coast," Mark Duckworth says.

"We wanted to enhance the festival experience for those fans, and attract new audiences as well, by offering a special ticketed experience featuring more incredible acts; this year we are stoked to showcase one of the world's best reggae and soul live acts, New Zealand's Fat Freddy’s Drop.

"The Kurrawa Park Sunday Ticket will mean Blues on Broadbeach can continue to grow bringing more international acts to the Gold Coast for our audiences to experience and enjoy."
