A Brisbane benefit gig — 'Bloodstock' — will be held to raise funds for the injured frontman of ‘80s psychedelic Sydney rockers Lime Spiders, Mick Blood.

Shortly after leaving Queensland earlier this year to live in Newcastle, Mick found himself in an altercation at a local nightspot. The incident left him with serious head injuries including brain damage and mounting financial pressures.

Mick is reportedly on the road to recovery, but his journey towards rehabilitation is expected to be a long and difficult one. “He’s out of hospital and he’s basically a day patient now,” Dan Nebe, the organiser of ‘Bloodstock’ and long-time friend of Mick’s, says. “He’s in recovery mode at the moment and he’s constantly whinging on Facebook, so I’d say he’s getting better.”

As well as organising ‘Bloodstock’, Dan is the frontman of Team Utopia, as well as Events Manager of Redcliffe’s Rock Central and proprietor of Bam Bam Management. Needless to say, he’s a busy man. “When [Mick] got affected – bashed – my first thought was to throw a benefit for him,” Dan says.

“The money [raised on the day] goes into a fund called Support Act, which is set up to help troubled musicians and fellow brothers and sisters in trouble. All the other [benefit] gigs are using the same fund and all the money will go to help Mick with anything he owes.”

The Lime Spiders were one of the most influential punk rock bands to rise from Sydney’s eclectic underground scene of the ‘80s. Hailed as “the best time-warp style, ‘60s garage revival I’ve ever heard” by the Dead Kennedys’ Jello Biafra, Lime Spiders fused psychedelic guitar licks with seething punk rock freneticism, garnering such notable fans as Iggy Pop and Joey Ramone.

With three studio albums, four EPs and a live record to their name the Lime Spiders distinctive sound was part of the ‘Young Einstein’ soundtrack and more recently on ABC’s ‘Paper Giants’. The video for their single ‘Weirdo Libido’ was the first ever shown on music television program ‘Rage’.

‘Bloodstock’ will be held at Beetle Bar on 28th September from 1pm. Bands on the bill include: Screamin’ Stevie, Dr. Bombay, The Busymen, The Counterfeit Umbrellas, The Pretty Fingers, Hill 60, Team Utopia and burlesque dancer Miss Red Devotchkin.
