BEMAC is getting in on the BIGSOUND fun when they present three emerging Brisbane artists of culturally diverse backgrounds who are carving their own, unique sound.
For over 30 years BEMAC have been at the forefront of discovering, supporting and promoting artists from a range of diverse cultural backgrounds.
As part of BIGSOUND, BEMAC will present a showcase featuring three such artists: Noralyn, Pistola Ave and Ofa Fanaika.
BEMAC Director Evan Alexander says the particular artists selected for the showcase reflect BEMAC's driving passion for bringing the traditional together with the contemporary in new and unique ways.
“Just as our artists continue to push boundaries, stereotypes and perforate the conventional with their genre-bending, time-warping expressions that honour cultural traditions while embracing contemporary experimentation, so too BEMAC continues to challenge the archetypes of cultural diversity, reframe the lens of multiculturalism within the musical landscape of modern Australia, and in so doing, push the margins further off the page," Evan says.
Noralyn is a Brisbane-based alt-pop singer-songwriter of Filipino heritage who writes songs with evocative lyrics and melodious hooks. Noralyn's immersive melodies are brought to life by an emotive voice and distinct piano-driven sound, which reveals hints of classical influence among the pop sensibilities.
Pistola Ave is a Brisbane artists collective comprised of MCs Danny Escobar and Chong Ali, along with songstress Amy K Ashton. Formerly known as rap group EMR, the band regrouped in 2015 to create music with a new level of imagination and released their self-title EP in 2017.
Finally, singer-songwriter Ofa Fanaika has amassed a large, local following over the past decade with her powerful solo shows and involvement with reggae/ dub band Chocolate Strings.
