Beehive PR: Music Publicity For Any Genre As Sammie Anschau Takes Us Inside The Hive

Sammie Anschau is the Queen Bee at Australian music PR company Beehive PR.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Beehive PR is an Australian-based independent music publicity agency led by Queen Bee Sammie Anschau.

Artists on the Beehive's roster include Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Hideous Sun Demon, Bad Pony, Caravana Sun, Kezra, Rackett, Birdz, The Getaway Plan and Fierce Mild, and encompass a broad spectrum of music genres – from indie, rock and pop, to hip hop, electronic, metal and anything else in between really (as long as it's 'great').

With offices in Sydney and Melbourne, Beehive are also involved with Melbourne event A WEEKEND as well as music composers The Walsh Brothers. We have a chat with Sammie to find out more.

So you’re in publicity. Do you specialise?
[Sammie] We sure do. We are in the business of music PR. We work on single, EP, album, tour and event PR across all music platforms including print, online, radio, TV and play-listing.

We love working all genres and regularly will service metal, electronic, indie and pop artists all in one month. Our only requirement is it must be GREAT music that we as a team are passionate about. We love what we do, who we work with and are incredibly proud of our roster.

A WEEKEND means more to you than Saturday and Sunday, right?
That’s right! 1-2 Entertainment (me) in partnership with Roundhouse Entertainment gets to run A WEEKEND.

This fabulous festival held in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens hosted two instalments of the boutique concert series, A WEEKEND In The Gardens, in 2017 and featured an incredible selection of Australian artists including John Farnham, Paul Kelly, Illy, Boy & Bear, Missy Higgins, Icehouse and more.

We’ve just launched in Melbourne. Any tips or traps?
Tips: Coffee! Coffee! Coffee! We have offices in both Melbourne and Sydney, and every time I hit the ground in Melbourne I go straight to the nearest coffee place. St Ali and Urban Pro Juice are my absolute faves.

In the evening: Tequila! Tequila! Tequila! Mamasita and Cookie are Melbourne musts. Live music. I love the live music scene in Melbourne; so many great band rooms and festivals – a music lover's paradise. Traps: Zip. Zilch. None. Nada. Nothing. Nothing but love for Melbourne.

Who are these Walsh Brothers we are seeing everywhere?
Ah the Walsh Brothers. The Sydney-based composition duo is an amalgam of two music minds from starkly contrasting fields.

Peter Walsh, a classical pianist who among his accolades has competed and performed in Australia and abroad, teaches at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and authored 'The Non-Musicians Guide To Parenting A Piano Player'.

Big brother Ian Walsh is a punk guitarist and engineer who has recently returned from London where he produced works for independent labels Wrench Records(UK), Crypt Records (Germany) and Bowery Records (Spain).

The brothers are the ultimate composition dream team, with completely different skill sets and the ability to work to a brief; they are very quickly becoming in-demand composers. I am lucky enough to work with the brothers on the business side of the project, so they can focus on the music.

So we’ve caught you after having lived in all three eastern Australian states and Los Angeles a stone’s throw from water each time. That’s not a coincidence. What gives?
I am a bit of a gypsy :)

Having offices in Melbourne and Sydney and spending time in Los Angeles means life on a plane for me. With three businesses also means I need balance. The best place for me to find this is in the ocean.

Sydney’s Northern Beaches is home when I am in Australia and Santa Monica when I am in the States. I grew up in Noosa, so when I get the chance I always love to go home.

The music industry is very much 24-7-365, so it’s important for me to find that time out, even if a quick half hour surf helps me recalibrate and resurface positive and ready to roll.
