Six local South Australian bands are gearing up after being selected to perform as part of the annual Bands On Track programme, opening for the headliners performing at this year's Superloop Adelaide 500 After Race Concert Series.
After a day of cars, the night is all about guitars with the After Race Concert Series that will see headline performances from Grinspoon, Pete Murray, Hilltop Hoods and more across three evenings of rocking Australian music. This year's Bands On Track artists, who have been selected by a panel of music industry representatives, are Colourblind, Seabass, Dead Roo, Kings & Associates, Outside Lines and DRESS CODE.
“Being selected to play as part of the Bands On Track means the world to us,” Finn Cameron from Colourblind says. “It's incredibly reassuring to feel that people are resonating with our band and it only strengthens our ambition and sense of community.”
Colourblind and Seabass take the stage on Friday evening opening for Grinspoon, Sneaky Sound System and The Superjesus.
For Finn and his bandmates, the once-fantastical notion of sharing a stage with their idols has suddenly become a distinct reality. “'We’re gonna play with Grinspoon’ sounds more like the kind of sarcastic comments we would have joked about when we started Colourblind,” he quips.
“It's a bizarre and surreal opportunity to be sharing a stage with a band who dominated my childhood road trips with their greatest hits CD, 'Best In Show'.”
A further 40 local acts round out the After Race series, including Hey Harriet, Matt Ward, Oscar the Wild, DJ Hot Chip, Elli Belle, Ollie English Duo, DJ Trip, and Diamond Skies and many more, performing across four stages themed after renowned international motorsports locations: Nürburgring Stage (Germany), Indianapolis Stage (USA), Adelaide Stage (South Australia) or the exclusive members’ 500 Club Stage.
Benny Cunningham is a member of indie-blues soul train Kings & Associates, who will open for Pete Murray and Sheppard on Saturday night with psychedelic indie rockers Dead Roo; he says performing among such a curated collection of local artists is a rare privilege.
“As a South Aussie act in the fortunate position of getting to perform in other states and countries, and in front of folk from different cultures, it’s always a wonderful experience when we get to connect with SA locals,” Benny says.
“Without question it’s a special environment, and the Adelaide 500 is one of the most significant events on the SA calendar.”
Final evening honours go to hip hop/ R&B group Outside Lines and pop-rockers Dress Code, both supporting Hilltop Hoods, Illy and the irrepressible G Flip. Cate Dyer from Outside Lines remarks on the sound and style of her group and what they bring to the live stage when they perform.
“Our music is a shout-out to challenging your limits and never boxing yourself in, with an intention to bring a positive and uplifting energy to every stage we get up on and make the best memories doing so,” Cate says.
The perfect pitstop after a day of white-knuckle, high-octane hijinks, the Superloop Adelaide 500 After Race Concert Series puts local SA talent shoulder-to-shoulder with some of Australia's biggest names in music for the complete rock and roll racing experience.
