Fresh from appearing alongside Snoop Dogg at the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, and with his new album quickly approaching, Baker Boy will tour Australia next year.
A six-time ARIA Awards winner, the Yolngu rapper, dancer, and artist will headline concerts in Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Barwon Heads, Melbourne, Darwin and Alice Springs next April-May as well as appearances at Perth Festival (February) and WOMADelaide (March).
"New album. New show. New energy. You mob ain't ready for what's about to go down," declares Baker Boy.
Titled 'Djandjay' (pron. Jan-jay) – named after his late grandmother and the Yolŋu spirit guide she shares a name with – Baker Boy's sophomore album sees the artist step further into his identity, his power, and his global vision.
"It's deeper, more personal and feels like my most powerful work yet. Named after my late grandmother and the Yolŋu spirit guide Djandjay, this album is about strength, truth, and stepping into who I really am. I really poured everything I got into this album over the last two years and can't wait to share it with you in full."
The album's – which is released 10 October (pre-order it) – current single is 'Thick Skin', a collaboration with Thelma Plum, Emma Donovan, Kee'ahn, and Jada Weazel. Born from the pain and frustration after the 2023 Indigenous Voice Referendum, the track confronts the ongoing presence of racism in Australia.
"It wasn't anger at the result as much, I think it was the way mob became a topic of conversation and motos like 'if you don't know vote no' encouraging ignorance. It highlighted the everyday experience of being Yolŋu, being Indigenous in this country and that hit me hard," shares Baker Boy.
Sonically, Baker Boy boldly leans into punk for the first time, while still rapping in his first language Yolŋu Matha. "I had been wanting to explore the punk sound for a while and this felt like the perfect track for me to let loose in that space.
"It's not natural for me to express anger through my music, I have this reputation for positivity, but I think the punk-inspired production allowed me to really say what I wanted to say.
"It has let me express these feelings, express the anger, the chaos and frustration in a way that's new and experimental for me but also in a way that was really authentic, it just came out of me."
Tickets on sale from 11am (local time) on 3 October.
