Bad Pony Are Chasing The Coast Sideways

Bad Pony
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Off the back of the success of their 2015 EP ‘Limbo’, the Bad Pony boys have released a new single and are travelling up and down the east coast on an extensive tour.

Jarred Young took the time to explain a few things about the band’s process, their desires, and life on the road. “I can’t wait. [The tour is] going to be awesome. It’s the biggest one we’ve done so far. Me, Mark the bassist and Sam the guitarist have been playing together for six or seven years now; we played together in a different band before Bad Pony.

“We all get on well. There’s no real fights. And if we ever do fight we just sort of say what we feel or yell it at each other and get it out of the way. We’re brutally honest with each other. We have a rule: rule number one is have fun.”

The band chose to record their latest single, ‘Sideways’, in a home studio, and it wasn’t their first time. “Cron, one of the guitarists, is a bit of a whiz. Him and Sam did the last EP 'Limbo'. We did ‘Zombie’ and ‘Sideways’ at Cron’s. It’s super handy being able to do that and it’s awesome that Cron’s so good at it as well.

“I don’t know that we’d be able to get the same sort of clarity and get our ideas down as precisely as we do without it. We’re all pretty much on the same page and like to experiment with sounds.”

Comparisons to the band’s style are endless, and with each sonic outing they further the boundaries. “There’s another EP on the way,” Jarred admits. “The tour is going for so long, there’s a bit of a gap in the middle of it, which is good because it will give us time to spend four or five weeks in the studio.

“Stylistically we tried to throw ‘Zombie’ out there as a kind of curve ball; it’s not really anything like our other stuff. And ‘Sideways’ was reeling it back in with an indie rock, pop, sorta tune. I don’t think the EP is heading in any direction really, and that’s the good thing about Bad Pony: stylistically we’ve been all over the place but it all seems to be congruent somehow as well. I think with ‘Limbo’, the songs are all pretty different. It’s sort of funny hearing what people liken us to as well. It’s always something so different.”

When asked who they’d love to tour with, the answers were swift. “There’s a band we’ve played with a fair bit – they’re really good friends of ours – Swim Season. They’re a five-piece out of Melbourne and they’re really amazing. We played a show together earlier this year and we both got picked up by the 123 Agency that night.

“International-wise I think Two Door Cinema Club, I think that would be a good gig. Local Natives would be my biggest I reckon, I’d fuckin’ love to play with Local Natives.”
