Babaganouj Are Not Shoey Fans

Brisbane band Babaganouj are set to release three new EPs in 2016. But their next step is to go on tour later this month.

The band's frontman Charles Sale explains how Babaganouj formed. “Due to a lot of false starts and changes – I forget that we started out three years ago – I feel like we only properly started a year or two ago,” Charles says.

“We were into that sort of '90s-hipster thing, slacker I suppose they’d call it. But now I’d say we’ve broadened our horizons a little bit and are into different things. We were were into The Lemonheads primarily, they were a really big influence of ours. We actually got to play with them!”

Babaganouj have recently returned from supporting Sydney band Palms on their tour. “It was really fun!” admits Charles. “It was the first proper tour we have done with another band. We’ve been up and down the east coast of Australia, maybe three times before, so it was good to expand our horizons a little bit and be on support with another band that we are really good friends with.

“It was a great tour! We went to Adelaide for the first time, which was pretty cool, it’s an interesting place, I actually enjoy it more every time I go. It’s a funny crowd, it was the first crowd of the tour where somebody yelled at me and asked me to do a shoey [the act of drinking beer from a shoe as quickly as possible]. I’m not willing to make myself do a shoey, I can’t do it. I like drinking but I don’t like drinking out of shoes,” he laughs.

“[The punter] offered me his shoe and his shoe looked frankly terrible! I don’t want to drink out of that let alone put my face into it. That’s many angles of grossness that I’m not ok with. I did manage to deflect that one; he did it anyway and the crowd went wild! This is my secret talent, deflecting shoeys and not giving into peer pressure [laughs].”

The trio intend to release three EPs this year that showcase each member's vocal talent. “We finally completed the recording and final mastering of our first [EP], which is pretty exciting! It’s going to be out pretty soon, I can’t remember the exact dates but it’s soon.

“We do have two more in the works as well, which is a fun little project for this year. ‘The Pillar Of Light’ will be out in a few weeks and our tour coming up is for that which is also very cool.” Fans can expect to see a lot more of Babaganouj this year. We are going to try and do some covers that are good. We need to work out some songs that more people like, so maybe we can put a vote out or something [laughs]. We’ll see!”
