Multi-platinum, five-time ARIA Award-winning artist Katie Noonan returns to the spotlight with a cappella quartet Australian Vocal Ensemble (AVE).
Set to tour Australia starting next week with six shows planned, AVE will perform works from their David Malouf song cycle showcasing Australia's finest composers, alongside new arrangements of Renaissance and Baroque greats Bach, Handel and Tomás Luis de Victoria.AVE sees Katie joined by three internationally-renowned artists in mezzo-soprano Fiona Campbell (Perth), tenor Andrew Goodwin (Sydney) and bass-baritone Andrew O'Connor (Sydney).
"There is nothing like AVE in Australia. An elite chamber vocal ensemble of international excellence, but one that is warm and welcoming to all," Katie says.
"We will champion new Australian works on every tour, engage with our First Nations communities at every concert and we plan to engage with local community choirs as our touring continues.
"I want to illustrate Queensland's integrous creative leadership by establishing Australia's only, professional classical vocal quartet.
"I believe it is vital to use the human voice to tell the stories of our time and place, and to encourage our audiences to use their voice."
Here, Katie shares a few things she did that she thought was cool when she was young.
• Reading Dolly magazine and cutting out my fave pics, and putting them on my school books with clear contact. I recall Alison Brahe was on the cover of my bible in a bikini – totes appropriate.
• Hanging out in graveyards smoking ciggies!
• Twisties (this ardent belief still stands).
• Wanting to become a nun. To be fair between Sister Janet Mead's rocking version of 'The Our Father' and my awesome principal Sister Anne Crowley at Mater Dei School in Ashgrove, I thought nuns were the sh.t! I soon discovered some fine print that put me off.
• Dressing in all black and being very morose during my brief goth stage, just before my tie-dyed, sticky jewels, patchouli drenched, vegan hippie stage.
