Australian Singer Jack Colwell Has Died

Jack Colwell
Founder and Publisher. Based in Brisbane.
Howard launched 'Scene Magazine' in 1993. Paul Keating was Prime Minister. Whitney, Janet and Mariah all had Aussie #1s and Mark Zuckerberg was 9. Over 30 years he's overseen the growth of scenestr to become Australia's largest – and only national – street press while forging a digital-first imperative in the mid-naughties. Social media remains a complete mystery to him. He's been spotted at raves, hip hop concerts, Motown revivals, judged battle of the bands, shot video for opening night and national awards red carpet, partnered with music industry showcases, comedy festivals and myriad other cultural productions ... and he interviewed Eddie Izzard. He likes Star Trek and a good Oxford comma — way too much fun at parties.

Australian singer-songwriter and musical director, Jack Colwell has died at the age of 34.

The Guardian reports Colwell's death on Thursday has shocked family and friends.

The Sydneysider was "looking forward to releasing new music [with a second album] soon" according to his Facebook post as recently as two weeks ago.

He spoke to scenestr sister site, FROOTY, during the pandemic. "I have been devastated not to be able to tour 'SWANDREAM', a work I have poured so much of myself into. I had plans to tour through the UK and Europe as well as Australia and it’s been challenging at times to let that go."

Jack's breakout track 'Don't Cry Those Tears' topped the AMRAP AirIt charts, even spawning a remix by HEALTH. Since, he's played shows around the country and even a headline appearance at Sydney Opera House, accompanied by a string quartet.
