Majella has been part of the scenestr “scene” for over 20 years. She has interviewed some of the biggest names in the music industry but the size of the star doesn’t matter as much as the quality of the conversation.

This duo have raving fans all over the globe. But without doubt, the most fervent and loyal are the ones from their homeland.

With the majority of their Australian tour dates selling out in record time and new shows added to cater to the demand, it’s obvious that Angus & Julia Stone are well loved. Actually: cherished, adored or besotted are more appropriate ways to describe the feelings that fans have toward the brother/ sister duo.

Vancouver Sleep Clinic was the support and being a local lad, Tim Bettinson was a beautifully apt choice as he was warmly welcomed by the crowd. His style befitted the venue, with the soaring vocals, ethereal melodies and synth sounds all combining to set the stage beautifully for the Stone’s.

The thing about crowds is – even when they are completely invested in a musical act — sometimes it can be hard to tell how much they’re really enjoying it, especially if the musical style is less than boisterous. And this is how it was with this gig. Until the end of each song, the crowd would stand silently, some swaying, some not moving at all, but most staring intently at the stage. Not until the conclusion of each track would people applaud, catcall, whistle and holler.

The duo were supported by an ultra-talented and international line-up of musicians, who were introduced individually at the conclusion of the show; but all shared similarities with the main stars – the appearance of gypsy wanderers, faces that lit up when they played and a general sense of shagginess (clearly no one cuts their hair often). They all had a lived-in look and an easy camaraderie that was obvious to see.

The stage itself was adorned with simple lights; hanging low, there were soft spotlights on Julia and Angus and a smoky haze wafting about the musicians. The whole setup had the feel of a New York jazz bar.

But honestly, these two could’ve played in the parking lot of The Tivoli with an out-of-tune guitar and with a cold, and they still probably would’ve sounded beautiful. So, imagine the impact they had when they played high quality instruments and were in good health. Mind-blowingly good.

Even though they are billed as a duo, it was Julia that stole the show. Part whispery crooning, part throaty wailing, with a hint of delicious coyness and a large helping of cheeky comedy, this woman is mesmerising. Her vocal talent was surprising and she showcased the depth of her skill through some surprising covers: ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ and ‘You’re The One That I Want’.

Playing a mix of old and new tracks, the duo are born storytellers, connecting with the audience and creating a feeling of wonder. It’s no wonder they’re internationally loved and universally celebrated, for they make music that resonates with your sweetest memories and rings the bells of your heart.
