It may have taken 30 long years, but the stifling heat of Brisbane's live music institution The Zoo is no more with the Fortitude Valley venue finally installing air conditioning.
Part of The Zoo's 'charm' for multiple generations of music lovers has been the humid, muggy, stifling, steamy, and suffocating conditions (particularly during Queensland's oppressive tropical summers).As much as it was enjoyable to feel rivers of sweat flowing down your back and legs while you moshed out to your favourite band, nobody should have to breathe the dense air of The Zoo when it's packed with clammy, slimy, thronging bodies sending pools of sweat across the room.
"In a sub-tropical city where temperatures soar over the summer months, we felt it was imperative for the installation to happen," co-owner Shane Chidgzey says.
"We see it as a necessity for the health and well-being of our staff, punters, and of course the artists that perform at the venue.
"Boo, Cat, Pixie and I are incredibly happy that we were able to finally make it happen during the first year of our partnership."
Given this amazing news, The Zoo have also revealed their New Year's Eve plans, with South Coast garage rockers Pacific Avenue making the journey north to cross the border as headliners.
They'll be joined by scenestr favourites, Melbourne punk rockers LOSER and fellow Melburnians indie thrashers Sophisticated Dingo as well as locals Bad Neighbour, Blussh and Verum. There'll also be guest DJ sets from Being Jane Lane and free karaoke till the wee hours to bring in 2022 just right.
Zoo Years Eve takes place at The Zoo (Brisbane) 31 December.
