Amy Vee Shares 5 Reasons To Experience Live Music In Person

Amy Vee's sophomore album is titled 'Same Skin'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Hunter-based singer-songwriter Amy Vee recently released her sophomore album 'Same Skin'.

"There is a general theme [on the album] about being able to move on from or accept the past," Amy says. "There are a lot of references to ghosts. . . things that haunt us or hold us back.

"The [title] track 'Same Skin' came from my feelings about age. . . that the outside changes but the same feelings, beliefs, motivations, ideas, desires still exist."

With international supports including Newton Faulkner, Passenger, Luka Bloom and Jeff Martin, as well as Australian legends The Whitlams, Lior, Sarah McLeod and Diesel, Amy Vee has plenty of experience entertaining old fans and winning new ones on stage.

Wth two shows remaining on her current east-coast tour, here Amy shares five solid reasons why you should get off the couch and head along to see a live music gig. "We've all been there - tossing up between going to see a gig or staying home in your PJs and watching Netflix," Amy says.

"Here are five facts for consideration next time you're facing that decision."

1: Live music helps you live longer

A study released last year found that regularly attending live music events (ie. once a fortnight or more) improves emotional well-being by more than 20 per cent and may actually add more years to your life.

2: Live music improves social connection

Not only does live music make you feel good, but it can improve your relationships with the people around you. It also gives you a more personal connection to the artist.

3: New music lights up your brain

Listening to a brand-new song for the very first time triggers the reward centre of your brain; the same area that responds to food and sex.

4: Music provides pain relief

There is evidence that certain aspects of music can provide pain relief, releasing feel-good chemicals, and/ or moderating how we perceive pain.

5: Your attendance fosters the creation of new music

With music sales no longer a viable source of income for artists, we rely on live touring to be able to keep our art sustainable.

If you want good music to keep being created, support your music community - go to gigs, tell your friends (people are more likely to go see new music on a friend's recommendation) and buy merch (1 vinyl sale pays the same as about 10,000 streams for an indie artist).
