Allday is a rising hip hop artist who found an interesting angle to share his new album, ‘Startup Cult’.
Last week he spent time listening to his new record with adoring fans… on a bus. “It was pretty fun. It was with a bunch of dedicated fans, we just hung out and people just got me to ring their friends and make snapchats on their phones and shit. Like hanging out, it was pretty cool.”
After exchanging polite hellos, I jump straight to my ice breaker: “What are you wearing?” He laughs a little awkwardly and responds: “What am I wearing? I’m wearing a jacket that I got from a girl who worked at my pizza store; it was too big for her and I just loved it and I tried to buy it off her; eventually one day when I was about to move she gave it to me as a gift.”
Based on your upcoming album ‘Startup Cult’ do you feel as though you have reached cult status?
Not really but I think that’s definitely why I named it that, to set that goal. I kind of came to this little conclusion in my head, like I’d rather be a cult figure… than a fashionably cool artist, you know? I’d rather be ‘Wayne’s World’ than ‘Transformers 3’, like ‘Transformers’ might do well at the box office but everybody likes ‘Wayne’s World’.
You’ve obviously become quite popular recently. Do you find people recognise you more?
Yeah for sure, I find it’s funny. I’m rarely, rarely stopped when I’m in Melbourne… like it’s really rare but when I’m in the other states as soon as I’m in the airport I’ll get a photo with someone.
Do you like the attention?
Yeah I do, unless I look really bad or hung over or something and then I’m like ‘arrrr... I wish I had a shower today’. Sometimes it’s just like, ‘don’t look at me’, and when a tag comes up on Facebook or Instagram I’m just like ‘ugh’ … I used to un-tag all the photos but now I’m like ‘whatever, I look like what I look like, I don’t give a fuck’.
Before we finish up here, I checked your Facebook and you said ‘Thank you, for being you’. I just want to say “Your welcome”. You have a lot of gratitude towards your fans and I think they appreciate that and I hope you continue that trend throughout your career.
Thank you! I hope I do but you know, once I get a few platinum records under my belt, I’ll probably just become an arsehole and start ditching phones at people and shit, but until then.
Allday’s new album, ‘Startup Cult’, is out today Friday July 4.
