Alice Night Asks: Culture How Could You?

Alice Night
National Music Editor, based in Brisbane, Australia.
'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

Born from the same conscious storytelling that artists such as Bjork, Beth Orton and Ani Difranco have inspired, Brisbane artist Alice Night is asking a lot of questions with her debut album, 'Culture How Could You'.

Coaxed into being in-between Brisbane and Brooklyn, and recorded in such diverse locales as northern NSW hinterland, the forests of Tasmania and garages of Brisbane, Alice asks: ‘are there better ways of living and being? Can we dream again of flying?'.

“In 2014 I went to New York basically to watch music and be inspired,” Alice says, “to be exposed to the New York live arts scene and write music that echoed those inspirations. I wrote half the album there, scrawling away in cafes with my guitar in hand, relying on the kindness of strangers.

“Once home in Australia I worked with electronic artists, composers, experimental sound-makers, dancers and theatre makers to bring the recordings and a live show to life.”

The songs that feature on ‘Culture How Could You?’ began after Alice formed a collaborative duo with ARIA-nominated and APRA-award-winning composer Robert Davidson (Topology).

A student at The National Institute of Dramatic Arts, Alice is also a budding playwright and novelist. She will tour the new album along the east coast this July, with Robert Davidson joining her. ‘Culture How Could You?’ is available now.
