Meet Your Maker – The Era's Soundtrack is a new body of music supporting the world premiere of theatre show Meet Your Maker at Brisbane Festival.
The theatre show is based on a fictional Indigenous pop artist in Queen's City who goes missing a split second before the biggest show of her career to meet her makers. An ambitious story co-produced, written, directed and performed live by Alethea Beetson (Kabi Kabi/ Gubbi Gubbi and Wiradjuri) with cinematic content featuring 20 actors. . . and the occasional music industry cameo.
Meet Your Maker – The Era's Soundtrack was a collaboration between: Moss (executive producer, composer); Loki Liddle (songwriter, lead lyricist); Reece Bowden (producer, composer); Sue Ray (composer, songwriter); Mark Munk Ross (producer, composer) that was performed and guided by Alethea.
"I work in the music industry so commentary about this space through my arts practice is very much in my lane, which also leads to original music being in a lot of my theatre work," Alethea says.
"The soundtrack team have done such an incredible job of imagining a Blak pop world that reclaims space, centres truth-telling and will make mob want to dance."
Adds Loki Liddle: "Working as a songwriter and lead lyricist on Meet Your Maker was pure fun.
"As this work is set in a fictional universe envisioning a world where mob had reclaimed our land and a Blak icon could thrive while being radical, was a badass provocation that I think really opened up the floodgates for everyone on the songwriting team.
"We had the opportunity to write freely to what should exist, and hopefully in doing so all contributed to dreaming it into existence, which is what Meet Your Maker is all about."
Meet Your Maker – The Era's Soundtrack plays as part of Brisbane Festival at Brisbane Powerhouse 31 August, 3-7 September.
