Irish-Australian singer-songwriter Áine Tyrrell [pron. 'awn-yuh'] has released her EP 'Fledgling Fall', a stepping-stone between last year's debut 'Queen Of Swords' and her forthcoming sophomore album.
Where 'Queen Of Swords' brought Áine to wider attention and appeal, on 'Fledging Fall' she takes the next big step in her ongoing creative evolution. “We thought that there's going to be quite a bit of time in-between [albums] and we thought we'd put an EP out in the meantime,” Áine explains.
“My producer [Mark Stanley], who I worked with on my first album, the EP and my second album that we've just recorded, had heard some of the songs on there and he said we should just get them recorded and get them out there.
“The EP is just five songs that came together really nicely. I went in with no expectations and it was beautiful because everything we recorded was exactly what we were looking for, so it's lovely. I really enjoyed the process of this.”
Áine says that while her first album was more about finding herself as an artist, writing and recording 'Fledging Fall' was an opportunity to further explore her musicality and develop her compositional skills. “Because I came into it with no expectations of anything being there, it was really a chance to explore and push the boundaries a lot more of what I would have been able to do on the first one,” she says.
“I really love the first album and the sound in its entirety, it has a little thing of its own and was cathartic in a way; I had to do that to move on to the next thing and then the next thing.
“The EP was a chance songwriting-wise, structure-wise and sound-wise to push the boundaries of where I could explore with this. It's beautiful because it's been a really lovely progression and, in fact, moving on to the next album we've jumped from that and pushed even further. I'm really proud of it.”
For her next full-length album, which is due for release around March next year, Áine spent considerable time back in her homeland writing and recording with a swag of Irish musicians including Declan O' Rourke.
“It was an intensive time to reconnect with where I'm from and also I came back from the experience knowing the tradition I come from,” she says.
“It's amazing to be rooted in that, to have a solid grounding in that, but then exploring what I have in Australia gives me permission to push all the rules away and take what works for me.”
While the next album is taking Áine into new and interesting sonic territories, she assures fans that it's not a complete makeover for her much-loved folk sound. “We haven't taken a vastly different direction, we've just pushed the direction we were headed in. So it's not like I'm coming back with a punk album or anything,” she laughs.
'Fledging Fall' EP is available now.
