"Why can't one be a gentleman and a pirate?"

So asks Rhys Darby's Stede Bonnet, a real-life pampered aristocrat who abandoned his life of privilege to become a pirate, in HBO Max's new period comedy series 'Our Flag Means Death'.

Based loosely on Stede's exploits in the early 1700s when he turned to piracy despite being a landowner in Barbados, the ten episode series follows Stede – nicknamed The Gentleman Pirate – who commands his ship with a jolly-good attitude.

Along the way, Stede and his crew encounter the fearsome and legendary Blackbeard, portrayed by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi.

"Get ye ship together and join us on the high seas! 'Our Flag Means Death' launches in March," Rhys says.

Adds Taika: "It's f...n Blackbeard bro! I grew this not quite black beard in just under six hours and the seven seas will never be the same again!"

'Our Flag Means Death' premieres in March on Binge and Foxtel.
