Brisbane band Ghost Audio will showcase their exploration of sounds they've dubbed 'space grunge' with the launch of their second album, ‘Heartbones’, in early September.
Their first album, ‘The Universe Could Kill Us All’, gained the band positive responses that lead to further show bookings and eventually the creation of their second album. Kevin, the group's lead singer, explains the feelings the band has in relation to the upcoming launch. “We are excited. It's taken a long time to get the album finished, so yeah we are keen to get it out there.”
Space grunge is the style the band has developed; Kevin explains how this sound was not created intentionally. “It's really a mix of mid-'90s grunge, hip hop, bit of heavy metal and blues. Really the sound kind of came out like that and then a fan coined our style as space grunge.”
The band has taken their style, exploring it further with their second album. Kevin says it was easy to develop the music as they didn't feel any additional pressure. “We don’t really feel any pressure. We have been doing this for seven years and have had ups and downs throughout. We do it because we love it. We wouldn't be doing it if we didn't love it.”
When discussing the creative process for the second album, Kevin says it was key to find their sound. “Originally we wanted to record something that wouldn't take as long as the first album, but it ended up taken a year and a half to make anyways. The difference this time is we know who we are more and we know the process better, which allowed us to be more relaxed with the process overall."
The band have been busy recently with a string of live shows. “We have played a lot of shows recently and we haven't had to really book shows for the last one to two years. We just take everything that comes our way. We have found ourselves musically, we have figured out how to bang things together quickly and everyone in the band has stepped up.”
The band will launch their new album alongside long-term friends Lunar Seasons and Deadbeat Society (who will each be launching new material as well) at the New Globe Theatre. The triple launch was unplanned in a way. With each band having new material, Kevin explains how the show came about. “We have been friends for a long time and always been big supporters of each other. We all had stuff coming out at the same time so it just worked out really.”
Together for seven years, Kevin says the band are still enjoying their time as a unit. “The band being together and connecting with the audience is the best part. We have audience members who come up to us after we play and ask about our influences, the songs and our band. It's great to get that response," he says.
“We are excited to start writing again, get our new material out and just continue to play a lot.”
