A discography featuring such timeless hits as '(They Long To Be) Close To You', 'Please, Mr Postman' and 'Rainy Days And Mondays', Karen Carpenter is a voice that has melted romantic hearts across multiple decades.
One half of the pop, soft-rock sibling duo The Carpenters – who ruled the AM radio waves throughout the '70s and early '80s (until Karen's untimely death at 32 from anorexia-related complications) – three of Australia's finest artists will unite for a national tour honouring 'the joy, the sadness, the stories, and the enduring love of the timeless singer-drummer'.Five-times ARIA Award-winning Katie Noonan, six-times Golden Guitar-winning Melinda Scheider and beloved songstress Abby Dobson (Leonardo's Bride and Baby et Lulu) will lead an all-women collective featuring Kathleen O'Halloran (guitars, vocals), Frejya Garbett (keys, vocals), Lucy Clifford (bass, vocals) and Lozz Benson (drums, vocals) on a 15-date run of shows next April.
They'll perform a curated set of The Carpenters' classic hits and lesser known cuts celebrating 'an amazing albeit short-lived life, brilliant songs, and a truly once in a lifetime artist and trailblazing woman'.
"I clearly remember the time Karen Carpenter's voice soothed me like no other voice could," shares Katie. "I was about nine and my parents were overseas and I was billeting with a family I didn't know well.
"I would listen to her extraordinary voice on my Walkman cassette and her voice felt like a close friend. It was the first time I remember having a really good cathartic cry to pop music.
"Decades later, I am thrilled to announce I have put together an extraordinary all-lady band to celebrate this amazing woman and her musicianship. . . [we] can't wait to play these songs for you. Multiple generations of women coming together to celebrate the timeless beauty of Karen's voice and artistry."
Tickets on sale from 9am (local time) on 24 November.
