A Few Live Music Moments That Have Left King Blue 'Breathless'

King Blue are an indie band from Perth.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

An indie band who first gathered momentum by playing a stack of local shows, building their live chops as well as earning a loyal following, Perth groovers King Blue established their indie-pop brand with three singles in 2021.

Now they've dropped their first new music of 2022 with the stylish 'Breathless', a track recorded with WAM Award-winning producer and engineer Andy Lawson (Tired Lion, Eskimo Joe, Gyroscope).

"We're steering in the direction of indie pop yet still try to incorporate some elements within our songs for the headbangers out there," King Blue says.

"Skye [Sam]'s delicate yet powerful vocals are complemented by the backbone beat, catchy leads and funky rhythmic bass, altogether creating a sound that we really love [on 'Breathless']."

Inspired by Spacey Jane, Ocean Alley and Stella Donnelly, the group will return to their natural habitat when they launch 'Breathless' on Friday (20 May) at one of their favourite venues.

"We frequent Indi Bar so often, it just feels right to play our new favourite single at a venue that we've grown really familiar with and comfortable with," King Blue says.

"We are so stoked to be joined by some of our incredibly talented friends on the night [Dolce Blue, Nectar and Dear Sunday]; it's for sure going to be a memorable one."

Here, Skye shares a few live experiences that have left the band breathless.

Debut Single Launch

I think I can speak for the whole band when I say that our debut single launch was a very surreal experience for all of us.

Hosting it at Jack Rabbit Slim's, we were most certainly not expecting to sell it out, let alone hearing a crowd that big belting our own songs back to us.

First Regional Gig Down South

I'm still mind-boggled every time I think about the first gig we did down south. It was alongside our good mates Death By Denim for their single tour last year in Dunsborough, and being the first act on for the night, we weren't expecting much of a crowd.

But when we got on that stage, the venue was jam-packed full of dancing bodies – even friends that we hadn't seen since primary school. It truly made our first, down-south experience really memorable and special.

Second Single Launch

I know we've already mentioned our debut launch, but the single launch for our second single 'Morning' was just unreal.

Our ticket sales were going pretty poorly leading up to the launch, and though we were excited for the song to finally be out, we were hoping to have a whole bunch of friends there to celebrate it with us.

Low and behold, on the very night we ended up selling the venue out and had a whole room of people singing each and every lyric back to us in perfect harmony. It was a really uplifting experience for us all.

Indi Bar

Some of our very first experiences of playing as a band was at Indi Bar's Thursday night Plug N' Play open mics, and I think we're always going to be grateful for those.

It gave us our first real taste at playing to and interacting with a crowd, and we grew quite a following from just those shows alone.

The venue is perfect for giving us a real intimate experience with the crowd because the space fills up pretty easily, which just makes the energy radiate throughout the whole room.

We're super stoked to be hosting the launch for 'Breathless' there 20 May; it truly is one of our favourite and most frequented venues.
