First listen to Oklahoma-LA group Sports' new single 'Baby Baby' and it sounds like another delectable chillwave, art-pop song that belongs in Tame Impala's back catalogue.
However, pay closer attention to the lyrics and the duo of Cale Chronister and Christian Theriot delve into the world of codependency and the related maelstrom of emotions with a personal monologue."'Baby Baby' is about codependency; my emotions being dependent on someone else's emotions," Cale says.
"It's about a vicious cycle of not being able to comfort someone who is crying, and their crying ending up making me more upset than they are.
"In the verses of the song I'm expressing my frustration with being unable to be comforting, and in the chorus I end up asking for comfort.
"It's a messed up cycle that I find myself. The ego placing itself where it doesn't belong.
"As the song goes on, that last chorus gets more emotional, and the same lyrics can be heard as actual empathy. As if something clicked and I felt your pain and cried with you; instead of just trying to make myself feel better."
With a sound that evokes the aforementioned Tame Impala as well as MGMT, and Empire of The Sun/ Client Liaison closer to home, Sports have been creating their sonic space since their 2015 debut album, 'Naked All The Time'.
Here, Cale and Christian share 8 facts you didn't know about Sports. How exciting.
1: When he was 13, Cale saved up 200 dollars to buy a Toys R Us drum set, so he could start a band and that's how he and Christian met.
2: Prior to releasing 'Naked All The Time', we released two songs under a different band name. It was after putting that out that we decided to take our music seriously and re-branded ourselves Sports.
3: We came up with the name Sports as an ironic way to tell our parents we were making money in 'sports'.
4: Cale recorded all of the vocals on 'Naked All The Time' in the nude, just so he could say that he did.
5: Our track 'Whatever You Want' off 'People Can't Stop Chillin'' was originally written as a Christmas song. We liked it so much that we changed a few things and added it to the album.
6: Our track 'People Can't Stop Chillin'' was a manufactured replica of a party that took place at Cale's house in Norman, OK.
"I did everything I could to recreate it in the recording of the song. I used some voice memos from some of the parties. But a lot of it was manufactured. I was trying to encapsulate that house and the memories inside it because I knew I was going to move out soon."
7: The song 'Dalton's Wish' is about an inflatable alien that got deflated.
8: 'Everyone's Invited' was originally going to be a concept album about a country band that gets abducted by aliens and forced to make music with alien technology in their spaceship.
The music was going to make a dramatic change halfway through the album.
