A band who deal in vintage grooves and funky-bluesy soul rhythms, Mornington Peninsula group CJ Commerford & The Supertones last month released their debut album 'Sugar'.
A record that was almost half a decade in the making (thanks in large part to the pandemic), frontman CJ Commerford weaves heartfelt lyrics bathed in sepia-toned warmth highlighted by groovy instrumentation and old-school feels. It's blues rock that will sweep you up, transporting you back to when analogue ruled the airwaves bursting with a positive energy that promotes a good, old-fashion boogie.
"A four-year sail through some of the strongest currents and unforgiving circumstances held a vibrant silver lining for this album," admits CJ.
"With the extra time through the pandemic, we were able to re-centre and evolve what would have been a very different sound if it were released in 2020.
"At first, it seemed like it was never going to happen but with patience and passion from us all we pushed through and are truly proud of the tracks on 'Sugar'."
CJ Commerford is joined by the five-piece The Supertones that feature guitarist Lennie Farchione, bassist Aidan Efron, drummer Alex Keser, trumpet player Dave Flynn and keys/ saxophonist Sebastian Farchione.
Here, CJ shares five ways to stay creative without the need for a wi-fi connection.
1: Going for walks - without something in your ear
Kicking on the sneakers and going for a stroll – it might seem inspiring to listen to music or a podcast to get your brain juices flowing, but sometimes letting the mind wander and explore on its own can help unlock what's brewing deep down; swimming also works a treat.2: Gardening
Connecting with the earth and soil. Being a part of the process of natural growth around can really stimulate your own.3: Ignore everyone
Too much Internet, too many opinions (yes the irony, mwahaha) but shove them in the recycle bin for a bit and focus on what you know. We weigh ourselves down with self-doubt in comparison to all the perceived A1 Instagram lifestyles – everyone knows life isn't that perfect.
4: Search reviews and find just. . .
The best coffee possible (it will obviously be in Melbourne, so heck take a flight).5: Turn off your phone
Disconnect from distractions for a few days, sometimes the mind needs to breathe!CJ Commerford & The Supertones play Bird's Basement (Melbourne) 9 September and Palais Hepburn (VIC) 1 October; the band support Joe Camilleri & The Black Sorrows at Sooki Lounge (Melbourne) 20 October.
