5 Ways To Spice Up Your Wednesday Night Shared By Super Ghost

Super Ghost are an indie rock band from Gold Coast.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With art-rock flavours permeating throughout the indie rock tones and Alex Turner-esque vocals from frontman Hudson MacMahon, Gold Coast trio Super Ghost have kick-started their 2023 with new single 'Don't Talk About It'.

Released on Friday, the track is bursting with an infectious energy that rides surf-rock instrumentals and mines moments of spaghetti western inspo. Lyrically, 'Don't Talk About It' is about remaining in a relationship despite a level of mistrust rather than face a confrontation.

"‘Don’t Talk About It’ is simply about the demise of a relationship where you can’t address fundamental issues or infidelity. When there are suspicions of wrongdoing, whether actual or not, there can be an uncomfortable pressure in the relationship where you feel dread and guilt whilst your partner is unknowing.

"[The song] encapsulates the realisation that a relationship is over, but grapples with the need to make it work and the feelings of worthlessness and guilt that come with being unable to address these issues and wrongdoings."

Super Ghost had a productive 12 months releasing a number of singles as well as their debut EP. The band also sold out a number of their own headline shows (Vinnie's Dive Bar, Greaser Bar and The Bearded Lady) while earning support slots with Mid City and Choosing Sides.

Here, the band share a few ideas on how to spend a Wednesday night.

1: Drink beers on the Mt Gravatt Lookout

This is the home-brand equivalent of Mt Coot-tha and we love it. There's nothing better than driving up a windy mountain road in pitch-black darkness just to reach the anticlimactic peak at the top.

All jokes aside, the Mt Gravatt Lookout never fails to foster good memories. Bring a couple of cold ones and convince one of your mates to drive and enjoy a relaxing night looking over Brisbane and hiding from the security guards.

2: Write a song with your best mates

It doesn't matter what instrument you play (if any), there's nothing better than inviting your best mates over and spontaneously writing a song – no matter how awful or ridiculous it is.

Make an event out of it and pick a theme, dig out a whiteboard and try and write the hottest banger of 2023. You never know what will come from it and sometimes we forget how easy it can be to make time to be creative. Remove the focus of goals and just have fun.

3: Host a movie

If you need to spice up your Wednesday night, there's no better way than hosting a classic movie night. Bring one friend or as many that'll fit on your couch, cook up some souvlaki and popcorn and jump into your favourite movie. We have given some suggestions from our recent movie nights.

'Vacation' (2015): Paying homage to 'Josie' by Blink-182 we thought we would sleep deprive ourselves one Wednesday to this goofy movie. It's a cheap laugh, but a good one and is a mind-numbing moment to share with your mates.

'Shutter Island' (2010): Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, this classic film takes you on a mental whirlwind just severe enough to leave you questioning your sanity for the remainder of the week, but still intact enough to get through the grind of work.

'Click' (2006): Probably the most depressing Adam Sandler movie of all time. With the silly concept of being able to skip through the boring moments of your life, this movie touches upon themes of slow-living and cherishing every moment in your life. It's stupid, but in all honesty, it's a real tearjerker.

4: Definitely don't trespass an abandoned building

This one goes without saying, but do not trespass an abandoned building. No, it won't be fun, no you won't get really great photos with demons in the background and yes, you will contract the bubonic plague.

Last time we checked, it's illegal and definitely not something we can advise in scenestr, but if it were legal then maybe we would give it a go.

5: Read a book about something new

If you been thinking about starting a cult, designing shoes, delving into interior design or even bettering yourself, maybe it's time to read a book about a topic that interests you.

Fiction books are great, and the ones with pictures are even more entertaining, but you'd be surprised how much you can pick-up from non-fiction books. There's always something new and exciting in the world to explore, but it's just about picking something off the shelf and figuring out how to do it.
