As our modern world careens from one 'cancel culture' flashpoint to the next, global social unrest and protests (rightfully) continue unabated, and the white noise of social media becomes ever deafening, the notion of common sense seems to have been forgotten (or pushed to one side so as not to muddy one's own narrative).
That said, there are also plenty of examples of people acknowledging how flammable modern society has become due to the unwillingness of the herd at large to accept other points of view or experiences if they differ with their own.If 2020 and the first stages of 2021 has taught us anything, is that we currently have a momentous, collective teaching moment at hand and it is incumbent on the individual to better educate themselves (on the relevant matters) so as to progress society forward to a more enlightened period.
Ahead of their headline appearance at Full Tilt Festival in Brisbane (sold out), Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, Northlane's Nic Petersen dispenses a few tips (that won't cost you a single dollar) on how you can become a better human being. Nice work, Nic.
Respect
It's like a boomerang; it won't come back unless you throw it.Empathy
Try putting yourself in someone else's shoes, see their perspective and try to understand how they might feel. We're all different, so be open to more perspectives than your own.
Apologise
Be vulnerable. Accepting responsibility for your actions and apologising can be the easiest way to move on. This seems to be easier for some rather than others, and probably is worth practicing, so just give it a try ;)Gratitude
Say thank you. Let someone know that you appreciate who they are, and/ or what they've done. Positive reinforcement never hurt anyone.Kindness
Although it's easier to be a miserable self-loathing human, smiling and being nice can make someone's day. It's that easy. You'll probably find that it might make yours as well. Pure win-win scenario.Full Tilt Festival takes place at Eaton's Hill Outdoors (Brisbane - sold out) 12 June, Coburg Velodrome (Melbourne) 3 July, Adelaide Showground 17 July, and Bella Vista Farm (Sydney) 31 July.
