5 Tips To Keep Indoor Plants Healthy With Lucy Iffla

Jazz vocalist Lucy Iffla performs at 2020 Perth International Jazz Festival.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A 2020 finalist in the National Jazz Awards, next month Perth jazz vocalist Lucy Iffla will bring the songs of Ella Fitzgerald to life with her quartet at the Perth International Jazz Festival.

Alongside Ella's iconic sultry ballads and upbeat swing tunes, the Lucy Iffla Quartet will perform originals by local artist Rick Webster, as well as Nancy Wilson classics with a twist and a Beatles tune or two.

Currently completing her final year of jazz studies at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Lucy has worked with internationally renowned musicians at the New York University, Dave Pietro, Jay Anderson and Tom Scott.

She has also performed with a host of Perth's finest jazz practitioners including Dr Daniel Sunsjar in his Afro Peruvian Ensemble and Quartet, Dr Jamie Oehlers in his Jazz Futures Band and Blowfish Ensemble, the all-female Artemis Orchestra led by Gemma Pharrell, and the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra led by Mace Francis.

Ahead of her show as part of Jazz Picnic In The Park (8 November), Lucy shares a few tips to keep indoor plants healthy.

1: Place plants in your room to lower the carbon-dioxide levels and increase oxygen. Great for your sleep.

2: Plants need fresh air just as much as you do, so crack a window from time to time.

3: Don't throw your spring onion roots away; plant them in your garden and enjoy home grown spring onions forever.

4: If your plants are looking sad, place them in your bathroom as they love moist, humid air.

5: Herbs can be quite temperamental, so place them in a well sheltered area and make sure to cut off the blooming flowers as this tells the plant to stop producing its yummy herbs.

Lucy Iffla Quartet play Perth International Jazz Festival's Jazz Picnic In The Park at Hyde Park on Sunday 8 November (1:30pm). It's a free event.
