5 Tips To Improve Your Own Busking Experience In Australia Shared By McDermott & North

Indie rock-pop duo McDermott & North's newest single is titled 'All Things Come And Go'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Glorious '60s folk, doo-wop harmonies and soothing, melodic AM indie rock highlight Brisbane pair McDermott & North's feel-good ballad, 'All Things Come And Go' – a celebration of life and the importance of living in the moment.

"'All Things Come And Go' is about coming to terms with the fact that whenever you're going through a rough patch, a ray of sunshine is just around the corner," the duo of Paddy McDermott and Rhys North says.

"As we grow older we learn how to let go of the things we once held closely in order to make way for the next part of life's journey.

"You also start to realise the finite nature of life and the importance of finding a sense of contentment living in the moment.

"The song lives in that space – not thinking about the past, not being too worried about the future either."

With the pair currently touring Victoria and Tasmania (scroll down for the dates), here they share a few tips to improve your busking game.

Location, Location

Don't stay in one town or spot too long. Finding a good town, busking spot is always a big win but overdoing a spot can often lead to the same people seeing you.

You want to play to as many different people as you can to maximise your chances of making as much money as you can. A good general rule of thumb we use is never do the same spot two days in row.

Smiling

Smile to as many people as possible even if they don't give you money. This tip isn't always easy, but it's vital.

You want to look like you're as approachable as possible; sometimes a smile can change the way you're perceived by a member of the public. We believe most people will be more inclined to give their hard-earned money to not only talented street performers but happy, polite ones as well.

Money Hat Placement

Keep your money hat/ busking case as far away as possible from you – no one likes coming up too close to you – is a good way to invite people to easily give you money.

The last thing you want to do as a busker is make it in any way difficult for you to receive tips.

Wardrobe

The better you dress the more inclined people are to give you money. Dress well and appropriately to your act; this demonstrates good sense of awareness and builds on your 'image' – the extra effort does pay off.

Patience

Don't be disheartened by a slow hour. Busking isn't always consistent with the amount of tips you receive. One hour could be brilliant while the next is very slow.

Keep this in mind and try not to be too disappointed if you start off slow. You may need to hang around for a bit to receive the tips you are looking for; you never know when that money will come, but you need to be in it to win it.
