5 Times Madonna Proved She Was Queen With Kristian Fletcher

Madonna
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Thirty years after 'True Blue', Madonna fans will get the chance to celebrate the iconic pop star's past, present and future at the Wickham in Brisbane later this month.

The Annual Brisbane Madonna Party is in its 11th year and will be a night of appreciation for all things Madge. Ahead of the event, founder Kristian Fletcher looks at the top five moments Madonna proved she was the Queen.

MTV LIKE A VIRGIN 1984

Emerging from a giant cake and writhing around the stage in a wedding dress, Madonna single-handedly brought SEX to the 80s and a gender-defiant moment in pop music. The world (and pop charts) would never be the same again.

BLOND AMBITION 1990

The Blond Ambition World Tour saw the Queen in full reign, hot on the heels of the 'Like A Prayer' album (and burning cross controversy). Filmed alongside the tour was Alex Keshishian's fly-on-the-wall doco 'In Bed With Madonna', one of the first of its kind, showing the star warts and all - or was it all just one big act? We were first introduced to the iconic cone bra.

SEX 1992

Pushing the envelope even further, Madonna lost a few fans with the infamous 'SEX' book and 'Erotica' album/single. The urban stylings of the innovative album were overshadowed by the controversy but the Queen survived the backlash with an album that still stands up (and a follow-up 'Bedtime Stories' which saw a more mellow Madonna).

AMERICAN LIFE 2003

'American Life' saw Madonna stripped back, personal and acoustic. A cult favourite amongst fans, her least-successful album saw the singer return to many greatest hits with the Reinvention Tour. She turned it all around two years later with the #1 album 'Confessions on a Dancefloor' and the worldwide hit 'Hung Up'.

REBEL HEART 2015

Madonna's Brit Awards performance saw the singer stumble down a flight of stairs. The motivating lyrics of 'Living For Love' brought a non-fazed Madonna back up, up, up to her feet to continue the song victoriously. She followed with a new album 'Rebel Heart' and a $100 million-earning world tour which reconfirmed Madonna as the highest-grossing solo touring artist.
