5 Times Girl Power Kicked Ass With New Globe's Kristian Fletcher

Spice Girls
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

They are the most iconic group of girls in the music industry, and they've created a worldwide phenomenon in two words: Girl Power.

The Spice Girls took the world by storm with their empowering message, infectious hit-after-hit, and an unmatched energy seen very rarely before them.

In celebration of New Globe Theatre's upcoming Spice Girls Tribute Night, organiser Kristian Fletcher breaks down his top five moments when Girl Power kicked ass.

'WANNABE'

Released in mid-1996, The Spice Girls' debut single 'Wannabe' hit number one around the world, but critics thought it was destined to be a one-hit wonder for the group... Until the follow-up release of 'Say You'll Be There'. Girl Power was officially here.

FIRST CONCERT

The girls feared their debut concert – people had seen the music videos, could they really do it... Live?
They performed their first ever proper show in Istanbul in 1997. Then, launching in 1998, the Spiceworld Tour supported the group's second album and set Europe and America alight.

'SPICEWORLD: THE MOVIE'

For some, the perfect vehicle for the girls. For others, one of the worst films of all time. Say what you will but the Spice Girls managed to helm their own movie and still survive it with their careers intact...

WHEN 5 BECOME 4

Geri Halliwell's decision to leave the group in 1998 threw a major spanner in the works. Would an American audience accept a quartet when they have paid for five members? The result, thankfully, was a wowed audience.

REUNION

The five members put aside their differences to reunite for a 2007-2008 tour and medley performance at 2012 Olympics. In July of this year, Geri, Emma and Mel B announced GEM: somewhat of a three-piece group in celebration of 20 years of Spice. So what's next for the girls? Their career has been unpredictable up to now, so we can only cross our fingers and hope for the best.

The Spice Girls Tribute Night takes place at New Globe Theatre on 16 September.
