5 Things You Didn't Know About WA Indie Rockers Pretty Uglys

Pretty Uglys new EP is titled 'Party Friends'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Three mates playing a raucous, care-free brand of indie punk and surf rock, welcome to the world of Perth-via-Busselton trio Pretty Uglys.

Last Friday, they dropped their sophomore EP, the five tracker 'Party Friends'. "Feels epic to get this release into the world," Pretty Uglys says, "collectively putting together these tracks in a way that helps solidify our own sound, direction from over the past 12 months at least, with both happy and deeper/ heavier tracks all in the mix."

The band also have a run of live shows coming up in May. "We are starting in Fremantle with a show at Mojos Bar 8th May. Next show is on the 13th playing a surf premiere party for Rusty in Perth.

"The following night we head south for a show at The River in Margaret River near our home turf, then cruising back up the freeway for the last one on the 15th May at one of our favourite venues, Indi Bar in Scarborough.

"Stoked to have a big list of mates bands joining us over the four dates, yyeooowww!"

Here, the band divulge some things you probably didn't know about them.

1: Pretty Uglys are three mates originally from Busselton, WA. Jaxon and Jack met in high school and had been playing in various other bands ever since. Jean-luc and Jax met while skating one day and decided to also team up. That's how we all met.

2: Sam Dvorak was the original drummer, prior to him moving over east; he and Jax met at a Dune Rats gig in Margaret River one day. It was his Auntie that came up with the name once our first gig came and we suddenly needed something. Questionable name, but probably better than some of the ones we had, hahaha!

3: Outside of the band, Jean-luc (bass) currently washes cars at a dealership to pay rent and also has a side project called Saul Goode; he also loves classic video games. Jack (drummer) works as a barista in Fremantle and makes a mean coffee; also has a big passion for gaming and cigarettes.

Jaxon (guitar/ vox) works Monday to Thursday as an electrician, and loves spending days off at the beach; always plenty of beers in the mix also.

4: All the songs for the 'Party Friends' EP have been written for well over a year. Like a lot of bands, COVID delayed a lot of releases and live gigs. That is the main reason it has taken us so long to get this stuff out into the world. Feels good to take a step forward after a long time in limbo.

5: Despite jamming with various neighbours right next door, Pretty Uglys have never had a noise complaint. we used to think it was due to our old neighbours being in their 90s and really deaf. Now we are in Perth and still haven't had one. We must be the luckiest band ever.
