5 Things You Didn't Know About Perth Psych-Soul Band Nectar

Nectar are an indie rock, soul band from Perth.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The newest members to Perth's Tone City Records (Supathick, DICE), psych-soul four-piece Nectar follow-up their steady 2021 (three singles: 'Plateau', 'In The Clear' and 'Rat's Race') with 'Waiting On The World (Won't Work)'.

A slow jam that's reminiscent of Dope Lemon and Tame Impala, the track also features the guest vocals of Ella Pilcher.

"'Waiting On The World (Won't Work)' is a statement towards the manifestation of excuses by placing blame on the world around you," Nectar shares.

"If you want things to happen in your life you have to work for it and make the change, which we have been noticing a lot amongst our day to day lives, especially as we are emerging as young artists.

"The song is particularly relevant at the moment as it is easy to find yourself in a stagnant state of life. It also reiterates that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that it's okay to be at that stagnant point."

It was through a shared love of similar music that sowed the Nectar seed. The band members (Jack, Jac, Judah and Matt) either have a parent or close relative who teaches or plays music that's inspired their own songwriting and musicality, including Jac's sibling Stella Donnelly.

"Jac (drums) reached out to me through Instagram to see if I would like to come watch his solo gig at a local music venue," begins Jack (lead guitar, saxophone).

"I had never met Jac but he seemed like a really nice, genuine guy who shares the same passion as myself. . . Music.

"I went to the gig and of course my luck I was stuck in the line for the duration of his set. Once I had got into the venue he came up to me and introduced himself.

"We proceeded to chat about music and had organised to meet up for a jam and from there a new friendship blossomed. I actually remember after the jam, driving home I could not shake the thought of wanting to ask him to be in the band."

Here, the band share a few more nuggets of info you didn't know about Nectar.

1: Fun fact, there is actually not two 'Jacks' in the band. . . One is 'Jack' and the other is 'Jac'. Jac's name comes from his Welsh heritage where there is no such thing as the letter 'k' in the language.

2: The feature vocalist on 'Waiting On The World (Won't Work)' is actually Judah's sister Ella Pilcher. She is a well-known vocalist in the Perth scene and you may hear her on upcoming shows/ songs.

3: Our live shows often include special guests who are insanely talented and play in local bands around Perth. As we've been writing and adding more songs to our repertoire over the past year, keyboards, horns and guest vocalists help us to establish a larger and more complex sound in recordings and our live shows.

4: Bassist Matt Smith's real name is Matt Smith and, as many would assume, not Matthew Smith.

5: Everyone within the band can play more than one instrument. Jac is also a singer-songwriter himself. Matt can play the guitar also. Judah plays the guitar and sings, and Jack plays the guitar, saxophone and dabbles a little in playing drums.

Nectar launch 'Waiting On The World (Won't Work)' at Mojos Bar (Fremantle) 2 April.
