It's been a long minute since Brisbane indie group Fresco Kyoto released new music.
More than two years since their previous single 'Whatever You Say', Fresco Kyoto recently took the covers off their new track 'You Save Me', an anti-love song, that's sonically akin to Birds Of Tokyo meets The Presets vibes. "A person has realised that they have entrapped their love in a relationship that is proving to be defined by their own flaws," Fresco Kyoto says.
"Through self sacrifice the person determines the way they rise above their ailment is on their own, and that their partner must move on to a better life. This song is an ode to time and the revelations it unveils."
'You Save Me' was produced by the band's own Toby Alexander with Cody McWaters (The Chats, King Stingray, Selfish Sons) between Hunting Ground Studios and Airlock Studios, where Cody has assumed the role of head engineer.
"What makes music creation fantastic for us is that each member truly contributes something unique to the process," Fresco Kyoto says. "As a result songs that start out as a simple melody and lyric are allowed to flourish and reach their true potential."
Here, the group share five things you didn't know about Fresco Kyoto.
1: Our vocalist Robbie had a spell on 'The Voice' back in 2014, and was a member of the prestigious Team Kylie (Minogue). She still won't return Robbie's calls.
2: Our guitarist Ryan is a true citizen of the world. Born in Oman to a Dutch father and American mother, he moved to Syria, then Dubai, then The Netherlands, then Australia, and is currently in Barcelona learning Catalan. He's still trying to decipher his Arabic birth certificate.
3: The original band name 'Fresco' was trademarked by various Italian restaurants, so we thought we'd add a word; given Robbie's parents were on holiday in Kyoto at the time, and the two words seemed to roll off the tongue nicely, our new name had come to us.
4: The original band was born out of a bedroom on Swann Rd in Brisbane at one of our parents' places – our hubs have since migrated across the city ranging from basements, garages, studios, and even university stairwells.
5: Between songwriting sessions for this track, in his spare time, our very own Toby Alexander was slaving away contributing string arrangements for Holy Holy's ARIA-nominated record, 'Hello My Beautiful World'.
