Anna Maria Jopek is one of the most charismatic and original voices in European music.
Anna Maria is a passionate visionary, a composer and improviser, who has brought to life dozens of artistic projects, merging contrasting musical personalities, cultures and styles. She has sold one-million records in Poland alone and has won every prominent, Polish music-award possible.
Ahead of her date with the Brisbane Jazz Club this Sunday (17 January), Anna Maria lists five of her favourite things.
Music
Music is everywhere. My favourite type of music is silence. I wish my music could properly frame silence. Emptiness is like eternity and the sound gets meaning only in the silence.
Poland
Chopin. Szymanowski. Szymborska. Milosz. Poland is the state of my mind, not only my Homeland.
Dedication
I wish we could be always serious givers no matter what job we do. The act of honest dedication makes us and the world better.
Polish Music
All Polish, folk-modern music is between trans and nostalgic beauty. Great inspiration for jazz reharmonisation and the perfect starting point for universalism of improvisation. These themes are so different from anything else on our planet and so deep in its essence. Love to penetrate that zona.
Australia
Australia is pure, straight, natural, beautiful... and so far away from all I've known in my life. Miracle! My grandmother, when she was 60, came to Sydney and never got back home. Never!Australia become her eternal home. Now I'm here to understand.
