5 Things I've Learnt From Recording Bands With Branko Cosic

DZ Deathrays
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Part of the local DIY music fabric for the better part of two decades, sound engineer/ musician Branko Cosic brings plenty of experience to the table.

Which is why he's one of the guest speakers at this month's Little Bigsound, a one-day conference for youth who are interested in furthering their careers in the music industry.

In 2015 he set-up his own recording business, 1000hz Recording... here are five nuggets of gold he has learned from recording bands.

1. Recording bands away from the distractions of city life (eg. on a rural property) always produces better results. Musicians are more relaxed and more focused getting a great performance when they’re not holed up in a stale, studio environment.

2. DZ Deathrays are easily that loudest band I've recorded.

3. Emma Louise was the quietest band I’ve recorded.

4. New strings, new skins, new sticks, new picks make instruments sound better.

5. Click tracks aren't evil; musicians unwilling to try click tracks are evil.

Little Bigsound takes place at the Judith Wright Centre 27 July.
