5 Studio Essentials That Create A Good Artistic Experience For Yoste

Yoste's new EP is titled 'Never The Same'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With close to 400k Spotify followers and a combined 150M streams of his music globally so far, Australian producer Yoste continues to build his reputation for alt-pop electronic soundscapes that spark strong emotion feels.

The Brisbane-based artist's newest release is the six-track EP 'Never The Same', which features the single 'Violet'.

However, 'Violet' will be well known to Yoste's fans who've seen him live at any point in the past three years.

"I did write the bulk of ['Violet'] when I was touring in 2019. I was playing it on tour as well; it's what always sticks in my head about putting it out, all this time later.

"I was actually starting my set with it! It's what I was starting my set with all the way back in 2019. It feels good to finally put it out!"

'Never The Same' finds Yoste developing his songwriting abilities, crafting a collection of tracks that forge a confidence by tapping into vulnerable subject matter.

"This record is focused on growing up, but not in an entirely optimistic or carefree sense," Yoste says.

"It's really about self-reflection and doubt as well as confidence and exuberance.

"I feel like the title – 'Never The Same' – captures that feeling of change and perhaps loss, but also hints at something beyond."

As his star continues to rise, here Yoste shares a few tips to creating a solid artistic experience when recording.

Setup

I keep an incredibly simple and streamlined setup, I find it easier to start that way. I find the more equipment I have, the more I struggle to simply begin. My advice to new artists is always to just start.

Tools

I have two guitars, one microphone, one keyboard.

Time Out

The greatest tool I have when it comes to writing is to take long walks, sometimes with music, sometimes without.

I've taken to heart the quote: "When the mind is stuck, work the body," though I can't seem to identify where I heard it or who wrote it.

Walking works the body and the mind. It clears everything away with each step, and into that void might just rush something magical, if one is lucky.

Sharing

Occasionally I'll bring my recordings to close friends and colleagues with more complete studios, though it's not necessary to make something great.

In general I'm hesitant about collaborating on my own music, simply because it's besides the point of what I'm trying to achieve, but there are notable exceptions for exceptional friends who understand the vision and are able to add their unique brilliance to certain songs.

Ideas

Essentially there is very little required to make a good recording, artistic experience or song. The idea is the key, and when collaborating the relationship is as well. The rest can be made do with as much or as little as is available.
