An emerging singer-songwriter fans of Haim and Weyes Blood will enjoy, Victorian Bella Deer recently released her debut single 'Bloom'.
An entrancing indie beat that skips along at a merry pace, Bella's dynamic, potent voice shines like a beacon as she sings about finding one's own confidence to be themselves."This song is about struggling with self confidence and mustering the courage to simply be yourself and accepting who you are and what you stand for," Bella says.
"When you start to do this, you find that you're accepted despite those fears. It also explores the frustrations with the lack of meaningful human connections in our society in a tech-obsessed world."
Deer worked with fellow Victorian James Duggan (True South Film) for the song's music video, which was filmed in Ceres.
"The 'Bloom' video explores the power of bright colour and light; it symbolises moving away from inner darkness and doubt that has been staring back at you in the mirror for quite some time."
Ahead of her next live show at Door Gallery Cafe (near Geelong) on 19 November, here Bella shares five of her favourite songwriters.
Voodoo Kid
Italian artist from Milan whom I really respect in regards to their songwriting, artist vision and aesthetics.Their song 'Pandora' is one of my favourite tracks from the past few years. It is a simple song, but it's the first song I ever fully learnt and committed to singing in Italian. Their melodies catch my attention immediately.
Kensington
A five-piece band hailing from Netherlands. The moment I heard Kensington, I was instantly in awe of their sound, presence, musicianship and the vocal ability of frontman Eloi Youssef. His voice is so rich, unique, powerful and full of so much tone. Their songwriting is so captivating. I couldn't believe how huge they are overseas, yet hardly heard of here in Australia.
The Jezabels
I first saw these guys play in 2011 in Geelong. I felt they were incredibly well rehearsed and sounded just like their record.I saw Hayley Mary play in Queenscliff just recently and she was absolutely outstanding. I almost couldn't believe it had been that long since I'd first seen The Jezabels live. Her vocals, songwriting and even stage banter was on point.
I have always found her inspiring (may have fan-girled just a bit and blabbed at her when I asked her to sign my tee, no ra-grets) and I hope I can be somewhere close to where she is in the years to come.
