5 Songs That Inspired Pinkish Blu's EP 'People Just Do Good Things Sometimes'

Pinkish Blu are an alternative pop band from Adelaide.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With a headline tour planned in October (that will visit Sydney and Melbourne before returning to their home town of Adelaide), alt-pop romantics Pinkish Blu have released their newest EP today.

Titled 'People Just Do Good Things Sometimes', the five-track EP finds the four-piece band (who have supported G Flip, The Rubens, Trophy Eyes and Odette) stripping things back – both "conceptually and sonically".

"'People Just Do Good Things Sometimes' is honestly just a darker toned sequel to [2020 EP] 'There's No Such Things As Good People'," the band says.

"We wanted there to be two sides of the story and it ended up to be exactly that.

"The process of making 'People Just Do Good Things Sometimes' can be summed up as stripping things down conceptually and sonically to get to those bare bone truths of the matter.

"Each song became a matter of forming a slightly more realistic and less romanticised take on concepts we've all experienced."

Here, Pinkish Blu's bassist Ricky Liddell shares five songs that inspired their new EP.

Paul Simon - 'You Can Call Me Al'

Paul Simon has been one of those artists I come back to every six months or so, and each time I learn or hear something different.

His songs are playful, but hold a steady narrative that hooks you all the way, and that was something I tried to do with songs like 'Start A Band' and 'Old Blue'.

The Strokes - 'Under Cover Of Darkness'

This song pretty much solely inspired the later stages of 'Backward', but also the drums sounds from any Strokes songs were big influences in texturing all of the songs.

The general idea of adding live drum hits and noises seems minor, but can really make a song. Also in the early stages of 'Backward', the chorus had a harmonised duel guitar riff.

Ashnikko - 'Hi, It's Me'

When this song came out, I was so happily surprised because I thought the days of a pre that repeats bigger as a chorus was over, and that gave me so much confidence in making songs like 'Start A Band' and even 'Over Me'.

It's also one of those songs that hits so hard almost purely because of the 'live' drum sounds, which is a big part of 'Over Me'.

Frank Ocean - 'Ivy'

Almost any of Frank Ocean's songs have been a huge inspo; from pretty much the first day I heard a Frank Ocean song.

Lyrically, the no linear storytelling that come across as almost poetic ramblings carry the songs. I think this spurred on some of those visually engaging one liners in songs like 'Old Blue' and 'Cop Cars'. The lyrics can be detached from the part, but still feel at home in the song as a whole.

BROCKHAMPTON - 'San Marcos'

This song lyrically resembles a few similar themes explored on our EP. Emotionally open, honest and self-reflective lyrics.

Coming clean with yourself about who you are as a person and realising that you're your own worst enemy most of the time and ultimately taking that realisation and putting it to use by moving forward in life in a positive light.
