After clocking up 10k streams of his debut single '116', Gold Coast pop musician Josh King continues to highlight his emerging talent with his latest offering, 'CUTS'.

"I try to write about things I've been through, so when you listen to my songs you get a glimpse into my world, and hopefully you'll find yourself in there too," Josh says.

King began his music career in 2017 after picking up a 4-string acoustic guitar. Soon he was headlining local institution NightQuarter, before a scholarship sent Josh to America for a songwriting opportunity in Nashville and LA.

"'CUTS' reflects on growth after a relationship," Josh says. "I felt like a part of me was so tied to my girlfriend at the time, that when we broke up I let a piece of my old self go."

Ahead of a Brisbane launch show (details below), Josh shares a few songs that have made his 2020 a little bit better.

1: LANY - 'Anything 4 U'

Ah, this song totally blindsided me on a long drive the other week.

The lyrics are just so honest, which I love, and I couldn't get over how great the line: 'I'll never walk into another bar, I'll burn these tattoos off my arms' is – really wish I wrote that. A 2020 lifesaver for sure.

2: Joan - 'Brokenhearted'

The keys in the intro are so iconic. Love the '90s vibes in this one. Obviously, it's a pretty sad track, but the fact that it's so well written means that I had to include it.

3: Sasha Sloan - 'Only Child'

Okay, so I know this one is maybe a little sad too, but being an only child myself I relate sooooo much. The topic is something that I think about a lot as I get older, and it's nice to know someone else feels the same.

PS. The lyrics in this one are classy as well (that's kinda important to me in case you couldn’t tell).

4: Taylor Swift - 'Betty'

I remember hearing this song for the first time and just loving everything about it. The story Taylor creates is just so intricate, and the way the song grows from start to finish, and that last chorus key change – just too good.

5: Holly Humberstone - 'Overkill'

I can't remember how I stumbled across this song, but I'm so glad I did. The whole concept of being over overkill and just wanting to be able to say how you feel without it being the be all and end all is kinda how being a 20-something has felt so far, haha!

Josh King launches 'CUTS' at Black Bear Lodge (Brisbane) 25 November.
