5 Songs About A Guitar With Black Rabbit George

Black Rabbit George
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

From the wellspring of childish fantasy and a lifetime of musical evolution emerges Black Rabbit George, a new incarnation for Tijuana Cartel’s frontman Paul George; it's a welcome opportunity for Paul to explore his long-held passion for folk and roots music.

His new single is 'Dusty Fingers'.

“This was a rare track for me, one of the only ones to flow seamlessly from the first chord to the final edit,” Paul says. “This is a project that has been welling up somewhere inside for a long while, Dusty Fingers is the Cathartic birth I’ve been searching for.”

Paul will perform the song next month when he plays The Triffid Roots in Brisbane. Ahead of the show, Paul reminiscences about his favourite songs about guitars. “With the recent departure of one of blues biggest legends, B.B. King, I couldn't help but think of rock & roll's healthy obsession with bringing the mythological guitar to life. Here's a list of the five, best songs about a guitar.”

5. 'Lucille' - B.B. King

B.B. King nails the song of songs about the guitar. In this gift from the guitar god B.B.'s guitar 'Lucille' saves him from car crashes, employs him, finds him love and frees him from the plantations. There's over ten minutes of pure B.B. King bliss.

4. 'Guitar Lovin' Man' - John Lee Hooker

Within the first verse John is making love with his six-string electric, which would seem weird if it wasn't John Lee Hooker. Sadly the guitar leaves him, which is the guitar's loss in my view.

3. 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' - The Beatles

George Harrison waffles on about people missing the right spiritual point of view or love or something, but manages to fit in the greatest line about guitars ever: 'while my guitar gently weeps'. There's also an iconic and perhaps self-indulgent solo from Eric Clapton.

2. 'This Old Guitar' - JJ Cale

JJ Cale in what sounds pretty much like every other JJ Cale song except this one's about his guitar and features a distortion tone I find truly tasteless. Though just like every other JJ Cale song I can't help but like it, even though most of my senses are telling me the opposite.

1. 'This Old Guitar' - Neil Young

Neil adds to the mythology of guitars by singing a song to Hank Williams' guitar, and of course Neil Young happens to own Hank's old Martin acoustic featured in the live track.
