For over five years, Brisbane duo Out Of Abingdon have been quietly making a name for themselves, sparking interest with their jazz-influenced acoustic grooves.
The duo will launch their third album, ‘Small Steps’, Friday 5th September. Before then, they share five scary adventures they’ve had with a double bass.
Dodging London rioters
Trying to find the way to our accommodation after landing in the middle of London’s 2011 riots totally unaware and jetlagged. People were boarding up shops and scurrying away. The only directions were ‘don’t go that way!’Blackouts in Varanasi, India
Surprisingly, a double bass wrapped in a blanket looks a lot like a body in the dark, back alleyways of India! The power constantly goes out in this city , which made the walk home from the gig very interesting, to say the least.Ground staff selfies
Sitting in the plane at Kuala Lumpur airport watching the baggage handlers taking selfies with the bass in its hard-case and then proceeding to throw it upside down onto the conveyor belt to crash and bang its way on to the plane... ouch!Rescue from the bomb squad
“This is the last call for the large, white object at unclaimed baggage, if not collected immediately, it will be classed as suspicious and destroyed.” Stansted Airport (London) intercom announcement after we’d been waiting for an hour at the wrong oversize luggage pick-up point.Chennai taxi ride
“No worries, we can take all in one trip.” We watched six Indian gentlemen throw the bass in the hard-case on to the roof of the taxi (no roof racks), tie it down with rope and then launch into rush-hour traffic for a very interesting ride to the hotel. Hang on!Out Of Abingdon launch their ‘Small Steps’ CD at the Brisbane Jazz Club Friday 5th September.
