5 Rules To Genre-Blending With River Movement

Gold Coast genre-blenders River Movement release debut album 'Impending Light' 28 September.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Gold Coast band River Movement are finally ready to release their debut album, 'Impending Light'.

Primarily recorded by one of their close friends in a scout hall in Victoria, the album captures a wide tapestry of styles, including reggae, rock, R&B and pop. Although lead singer/ rapper Jordan 'River' Winslade feels the term 'folk-rap' sums it up best. “Just don’t say it to fast,” he adds.

While River is the group's primary songwriter, he says each member adds their own flavour to the mix. “When I met Kristian, his guitar playing took my songs to a whole, new level. Soon after that, I met [drummer/ vocalist] Chris whose professionalism and ability expanded things again. When we finally found the right bass player, that’s when River Movement really found its new sound.”

Here, River lists a few rules to 'genre-blending'.

1: Be yourself

If you’re too focussed on trying to fit the mould, you’re probably missing the point. The goal of an artist is to bring something people haven’t heard before.

2: Own it – love your sound

If people see that you believe in what you’re sharing and having a good time doing it, they’ll buy into it quicker than you think.

3: Be straight up with your audience and bring them along for the ride

Make it clear to your listeners what sort of experience they’re in for. It sets the tone for a fun ride of discovery for soon-to-be fans.

4: Find a freakishly good lead guitarist

A drummer that can rap can help in some cases too.

5: Have fun

The fact that people don’t know where you fit is actually your greatest weapon. There are no rules and your lane is more like a multi-laned freeway with countless intersections and side-roads.

'Impending Light' is released 28 September.
